One Room Challenge – Week 6: On Target…Maybe

wallpaper removal plaster

Yet another week of the One Room Challenge…and another week of scraping wallpaper. Betcha didn’t see that one coming!

Week 8 is the final week, so the deadline is coming up very soon for having alllll of this wallpaper removed.

Here’s where I was on this section of wall at the end of last week:

*takes a bow* Thank you, thank you, thank you…It might not look like much, but my arthritic, scratched up hands beg to differ. ;) This stubborn wallpaper seriously gets scraped off inch by inch. No lie.

However, a funny/bad story about my trusty wallpaper scraper.

The story goes that as I was scraping, my husband, Karl, came bounding into the room and regarded me as I took a mini break, catching my breath after a difficult stretch of wallpaper.

“Let me try. I want to see how hard it really is to do.”

“Be my guest.”

He took it and fumbled for a few seconds as he failed to get any bits off. Then he gave it a little too much power and got one little piece to fly off across the room. Yikes.

He buckled down with more determination, but then it slipped a bit and…he broke the blade off (and it slightly cut his finger).

I’ve been using this scraper for weeks. He uses it for less than a minute and it’s a goner! Ugh.

Good thing he’s cute.

A moment of silence for my loyal wallpaper scraper that met its end not at joint compound but…at my husband’s hands.

So, on the agenda this week…I have to get a new scraper.

I also still have to do the rest of the two-window wall…

…and the whole wall on the other side of the single window…

…and behind her bed and around both doors…

All in 3 weeks.

3 more weeks, 3 more weeks, 3 more weeks…

Send help.

And if my husband helps again…please send more scrapers.

  1. Oh I so do not envy you, but you know, really it is a good thing you took on this challenge because you may not have had the determination to persevere otherwise, and in the end it will be amazing.

  2. You may have ruled out a wallpaper steamer, but buying one (for about $50 at Home Depot) changed my life. Made removing the paper about 500% faster and easier.

    1. Hi Ann! Wallpaper steamers are pretty great. I was using a mega wallpaper steamer in the beginning, but the mess (and steam/water droplets still getting into crannies no matter how many towels, taping off, and plastic) and not getting much more ahead with it was making me question if it was what I should stick with. So when I had to do above the radiator the other week where taping things off to protect the floor and baseboards would have been difficult, I simply scraped instead and have found it’s about the same pace as it was with the steamer. So at least for this room, it’s looking like it’s gonna be scraping works best. But man, sure do wish the steamer would have worked out! :)
